Single universal child allowance (Assegno unico e universale)

It is INPS’s monthly financial support for families with dependent children, from the seventh month of pregnancy until age 21 (with some conditions after 18), with no age limit for children with disabilities. The amount depends on ISEE and the number of children. Since 2022 it has replaced the family allowance for households with children, the baby bonuses and other earlier measures.

Household allowance (ANF)

INPS support for families of employees, pensioners and other insured workers who have no dependent minor children (for whom the single allowance is requested instead). It depends on the number of household members and household income, within limits set every year. A similar benefit exists for workers registered with the Gestione separata who are neither pensioners nor enrolled in other compulsory schemes.

Maternity, paternity and parental leave

Maternity leave is the compulsory period of absence from work for employed women before and after childbirth. In some cases where the mother cannot take it, it goes to the father. Employed fathers are also entitled to compulsory paternity leave, and both parents can request parental leave and breastfeeding rest periods. These rights also apply in case of adoption or foster care.

Early maternity leave

In high-risk pregnancies the absence from work can start earlier than the ordinary leave period, on request and with the required medical documentation.

Maternity allowance from municipalities and the State

A payment for each child born (or adopted or placed in pre-adoptive foster care before age 6) to mothers who receive no maternity pay or receive a lower amount. The Comune grants it and INPS pays it, provided income and residence requirements are met.

Birth bonus and nursery bonus

The birth bonus (the so-called «bonus mamma domani») is a one-off payment for the birth or adoption of a child. The nursery bonus (bonus asilo nido) helps pay fees for public and private nurseries and home care for children under three with serious chronic illnesses; the amount depends on ISEE and family composition. Amounts and requirements are updated by law: ask our staff for the current conditions.

Extraordinary leave to care for a family member with a severe disability

Paid leave from work for employees who care for a family member with a severe disability recognised under article 3, paragraph 3, of Law 104/92.

Marriage leave

Workers who get married are entitled to a period of paid extraordinary leave, to be taken within 30 days of the wedding, civil or religious with civil effects.

Inclusion allowance (Assegno di inclusione)

The financial support for vulnerable families that replaced the Reddito di cittadinanza (citizenship income). More information on the page Inclusion allowance and Training and work support.
