Residence in Italy for EU citizens

EU citizens with a valid travel document, and their family members, even non-EU ones with a valid passport, can move freely within the Union and stay in Italy. The procedures depend on the length of stay and the type of applicant.

Procedures

  • stays of up to 3 months for EU citizens and their family members: no formalities are required; non-EU family members must submit a declaration of presence to the border police or the Questura within 8 days of entry;
  • stays of more than 3 months for EU citizens: you must register with the registry office (anagrafe) of the Comune where you intend to live, showing that you have sufficient resources for yourself and your family and health insurance (or SSN registration), or that you work or study;
  • stays of more than 3 months for non-EU family members of an EU citizen: you must apply to the Questura for the residence card for family members of an EU citizen, valid for 5 years. When it expires the family member can apply for a permanent residence card.
