Residence permit for study

Residence permit for study: what it is and who can apply

Foreign minors in Italy have the right to compulsory education. Those staying in Italy with a permit for work, family reasons, political asylum, subsidiary protection or other reasons can attend study and vocational training courses. Those who enter Italy to study, on the other hand, need a study visa and the related permit. It is also possible to apply for a residence permit for scientific research or volunteering.

Duration

The study permit cannot be shorter than the period of attendance of the study or training course, even if it lasts several years, and it depends on an annual check of academic progress.

Attending university in Italy

Those who want to attend university in Italy can submit their enrolment application to the Italian diplomatic mission in their country. After the requirements are checked, a study visa is issued, with which you can enter Italy and apply for a residence permit.

Studying and working

Foreign nationals with a study permit can do employed work for no more than 20 hours a week, within an annual limit of 1,040 hours.

Converting the permit for work reasons

Foreign students who obtain a bachelor’s or master’s degree, a PhD or a first- or second-level university master’s can, if they hold a valid study permit, ask to convert it into a permit for employed or self-employed work, even outside the decreto flussi quotas. Those who have not obtained these qualifications can also request conversion for work, under certain conditions, within the set quotas.
